The Northern athlete, Mary Peters, has been made a Dame in Queen Elizabeth's birthday honours list. Ms Peters, who won a gold medal for the pentathlon in the 1972 Olympic Games, had already been awarded an MBE and an OBE for services to sport. Among other awards are a knighthood for the actor Michael Caine and an MBE for the television presenter Carol Vorderman.
