A post mortem examination has indicated that 81-year-old Patrick Logan, who died at his home at Castlejordan in County Meath yesterday evening, suffered a heart attack. His 83-year-old brother, Peter, is still recovering in hospital after two intruders entered their home and attacked them. Gardaí are continuing house-to-house inquiries as part of their investigation into the death of Mr Logan. They have appealed for information about traffic on the approach roads to Castlejordan yesterday afternoon and about any people seen acting suspiciously in the area.
This was a savage and shocking attack on two elderly brothers, which left one of them dead and the other in hospital. 81-year-old Patrick Logan lived with his 83-year-old brother Peter at their isolated cottage near the village of Castlejordan. At around 3.45pm, two men appear to have conned their way into the brother's home by asking about the score in a GAA match. Once inside, they attacked the elderly men, beating them with broom handles. Peter Logan suffered injuries to his back and face and his condition in Tullamore General Hospital this morning was described as stable.
A farm leader has called for a review of Garda deployment in rural areas. The President of the Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association, Pat O'Rourke, said recent vicious attacks on old people living in rural areas was a stark reminder of their vulnerability.
