Fine Gael puts down motion of censure following Harney re

Fine Gael has put down a motion of censure in the Dáil over remarks made by the Tánaiste in a weekend newspaper about former Taoiseach Charles Haughey. In the newspaper interview, Mary Harney was reported to have said that she thought Mr Haughey should be convicted following the latest allegations at the Moriarty Tribunal. Today Mary Harney said that when she made the comments she was not talking about a particular case before the courts. The Tánaiste added that she was well aware of due process and would never comment on an individual case.

When asked to comment on the fact that Fine Gael intends to raise the issue in the Dáil tomorrow, the Tánaiste said that it was regrettable that people would play politics with this issue.
