In Zimbabwe, a group of squatters engaged in a campaign for land reform have invaded the farm of Ian Smith, who was Prime Minister of the country when it was still under white rule and called Rhodesia. Mr Smith has played down the importance of the invasion, saying it involved a small group of local people.
Following an emergency meeting of the leaders of the Movement for Democratic Change yesterday, Zimbabwe's main opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, called for "mass action" against the ruling party's violence and intimidation. During the day, police armed with automatic rifles prevented an opposition rally for peace in the capital, Harare, a day after President Robert Mugabe called for an end to violence.
