A big security operation has been mounted in Brazil to discourage violent protests against celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of the country's discovery by Portugal. The festivities are centred on the coastal town of Porto Seguro, where Portuguese explorers first dropped anchor 500 years ago today. 5000 police have been drafted in to prevent any violence during protests by Indians, blacks and landless peasants.
