A big security operation is being mounted in Washington to head off protests coinciding with a meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Protestors against global capitalism are planning to disrupt the meeting. Police are hopeful that they can prevent a repeat of violence which marked last year's World Trade Organisation's conference in Seattle.
This morning, police raided and closed down a warehouse which protesters were using as their headquarters. It later emerged that fire chiefs had declared the site unsafe. The warehouse was reported to have been used by demonstrators to train for mass protests planned for Sunday and Monday.
