Five Oscars for "American Beauty"

The film "American Beauty" has won five Oscars, including Best Picture, at the 72nd Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Kevin Spacey won Best Actor award, while the Best Director award went to Sam Mendes. The film also won the Cinematography award and Best Original Screenplay. The American actress, Hilary Swank, won Best Actress for her role in "Boys Don't Cry".

Angelina Jolie was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Girl, Interrupted". The British actor, Michael Caine, won Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Cider House Rules", which also won Best Adapted Screenplay. "The Matrix" won awards for Sound, Sound Effects Editing, Film Editing and Visual Effects. Best Original Score was "The Red Violin" by John Corigliano; while Phil Collins won best original song for 'You'll Be In My Heart' from the animated film, "Tarzan".

The Spanish movie, "All About My Mother", directed by Pedro Almodovar, won the Best Foreign Language award. The Polish director Andrzej Wajda was given an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement and Warren Beatty was presented with the Irving Thalberg Award, the highest honour for a producer.

"Topsy-Turvy" won two awards, Costume and Makeup, while "Sleepy Hollow" won the award for Art Direction. Other awards went to "One Day in September" - Best Documentary Feature; "King Gimp" - Best Documentary Short; "The Old Man and the Sea" – Best Animated Short Film; "My Mother Dreams The Satan's Disciples In New York" – Best Live Action Short Film.
