The founder of the country's leading chain of addiction treatment centres, Sister Consilio Fitzgerald, has said alcoholism and drug addiction are "two of the most destructive and damaging forces" in Irish life today. Speaking in Galway, Sister Consilio said 99,000 Irish men and women now have serious alcoholism problems while another 35,000 are destroying their lives through drug taking.
