ETA blamed for bomb attack in Basque region

A car bomb has exploded in the Basque city of San Sebastian, injuring at least seven people. Two policemen were among those injured in the attack, which happened six days before a Spanish general election. Police believe that the separatist group ETA was responsible.

The bomb went off at around 9pm last night. Eyewitness said that it was detonated as a vehicle from the civil guard passed down a residential street in the northern town of San Sebastian. Two of the injured are members of the civil guard, the other three injured are civilians. One is a women; two are believed to be in a serious, but not life threatening condition.

While nobody has claimed responsibility for the bomb, Spanish policed say that it was the work of ETA. If confirmed, it will be the third attack by ETA since it ended its 14-month-old ceasefire in December. The Spanish security forces have been put on high alert for another attack in the run up to Sunday's general election there.
