RTÉ's Managing Director of Television, Joe Mulholland has announced that he is to retire later this year. The current director of TG4, Cathal Goan, takes over as television director with immediate effect. Mr Goan continue to have responsibility for TG4 until a successor is appointed. Joe Mulholland is due to step down in October when he will be 60.

Mr Mulholland has held a number of management positions since joining RTÉ in 1970 including Controller of Television Programmes and Director of News. He also edited the award winning documentary and current affairs programme Today Tonight. RTÉ has said it regrets Mr Mulholland's decision to stand down and paid tribute to his outstanding contribution to Irish broadcasting and culture.

In a separate announcement, the station has appointed Gerry Reynolds as Controller of Digital Channels. Mr Reynolds is currently Head of Broadcasting in Cork.
