Third man claims Nevin asked him to murder husband

A third man has told the Cathernine Nevin murder trial that she solicited him to murder her husband. William McClean claims Mrs Nevin made the proposition when he visited her in hospital in 1990. Mr McClean also claimed he has a sexual relationship with Catherine Nevin over a two year period.

William McClean claims he first met Catherine Nevin around the end of 1984 in the Red Cow Inn in Dublin. They were both alone and they got talking. He said a sexual relationship developed and it lasted until September 1986. Mr McClean said said Tom Nevin knew about the relationship because he walked into the bedroom one morning when Mr McClean and Mrs Nevin were in bed together. He said Mr Nevin did not say anything. He asked for the keys to the flat and then just closed the door and left.

William McClean claimed he helped out in Jack White's Inn at weekends but not for payment. He said he was paid in kindness.

William McClean claims that in 1990, Catherine Nevin contacted him and asked him to visit her in St. Vincent's Private Hospital. He thought she had some heart problems. Mrs. Nevin told him she was not getting on with Tom and asked would it be possible to get someone to do a job on him; to kill him. A payment of £20,000 was mentioned. He asked her why and she said she would get the insurance money, the lot, everything. But William McClean told the jury that he responded “No f**king way” and got up and walked out.

Under cross examination, Mr McClean revealed he had three previous convictions, two in Northern Ireland for deception and one in the South for what he thought was called fraud.
