The RUC is investigating damage that was caused to the Republican plot at Milltown Cemetery in Belfast last night. Hunger striker Bobby Sands and the three IRA members shot dead by the SAS at Gibraltar in l988 are among those buried at the Republican plot. More than 20 granite memorial plaques have been damaged, many of them beyond repair.
An RUC spokesman said that the matter was first reported in a telephone call to a Belfast newspaper last night. Alec Maskey, the Sinn Féin Assembly member for West Belfast, said that serious questions had been raised by the attack at the cemetery, which is overlooked by an RUC station.
