Anti-Pinochet campaigners have been to the Home Office in London to demonstrate against the former dictator's proposed release on medical grounds. British Home Secretary Jack Straw has indicated that he is likely to end extradition proceedings and let the General go home, possibly later this week.
Today noisy demonstration outside the Home Office this morning was virtually the end of the road for those who want to see General Pinochet stand trial in Spain. Following medical checks on the 84-year-old General last week, the Home Secretary declared that he is likely to halt extradition proceedings and let him go home to Chile. Jack Straw has allowed until five o'clock this afternoon for opponents to lodge any representations.
Today, human rights groups including Amnesty International brought submissions to the Home Office. They want the results of Mr. Pinochet's medical tests made public. They are concerned that the secret medical evidence may not reflect the general's true condition. The Spanish government has also asked for a second medical opinion on the general's fitness to stand trial.
The Home Office has made it clear that, although the deadline is today, it could be some time before Mr Straw makes his final ruling on the matter. It may be several days before Augusto Pinochet learns his fate.
