There is growing international pressure on the British Home Secretary, Jack Straw, over his plans to stop the extradition to Spain of the former Chilean dictator, General Augusto Pinochet. Last Tuesday, Mr Straw said that medical specialists had concluded the general was unfit to stand trial. However, the Spanish judge who began the extradition process has asked for a second medical examination.
A French judge also wants to question the General about the disappearance of French citizens in Chile. And Belgium has said it will also continue to press for his extradition. Mr Straw has given all parties until Tuesday to put their cases to him before he makes a final decision.
