Number of journalists killed for doing their job doubles

The Paris-based press freedom organisation, Reporters san Frontieres, has reported that at least 36 journalists were killed in 1999 for doing their job or voicing their opinions. Investigators attribute the increase in killings, almost twice as many reported last year, to the spread of armed conflict. Another 446 journalist were arrested during the year, 85 of whom are still in jail. While, over 650 journalists had had been attacked or threatened in 1999 with almost 360 media organisations censored.
