The Taoiseach has announced that the outgoing Chief Justice, Liam Hamilton, has been asked to head an investigation into the 1974 bombings in Dublin, Monaghan and Dundalk. The investigation will be held in private, but the judge's findings will be examined in public by the Oireachtas Committee on Justice and Equality. The committee will then decide whether further action is needed to establish who was responsible for the atrocities.
The announcement has been welcomed by Justice for the Forgotten, which represents a number of survivors and relatives of victims. They said that they see the investigation as the first step in the establishment of a public inquiry.
