A man has been remanded in custody by Limerick District Court on a murder charge. The charge follows the death of a man after an attack in the city yesterday. 25-year-old Robert McNamara appeared at a special sitting of Limerick District Court this evening charged with the murder of Brendan O'Connell.
McNamara of 37 Clarina Park, Ballinacurren Weston in Limerick City was arrested last night and questioned by Gardaí throughout the day. This evening, he was charged with the murder of 22-year-old Brendan O'Connell, at the People's Park in Pery Square in Limerick City centre yesterday. The court was told McNamara replied "I'm sorry" when the murder charge was read to him. Judge Tom O'Donnell remanded him in custody to Limerick Prison to appear at the District court again next Tuesday.
Brendan O'Connell was found lying on the kerbside at Pery Square at about 5pm last night in Limerick City. He was from Limerick City, but had been living in Doon, County Limerick. Mr O'Connell died later in hospital. A post mortem examination established that he died from a single stab wound to the heart.
