Joseph Murphy Junior has begun his evidence to the Flood Tribunal in which he defended himself against allegations made by James Gogarty. Mr Murphy denied ever meeting the former City and County Manager George Redmond. He is also expected to deny that he was central to the Ray Burke payment in 1989.
Joseph Murphy junior began his evidence today describing his move up the ranks of the Murphy group of companies. He started off as a labourer and then a foreman in England and said he never had any ambitions to progress further. However, in 1988 during a series of dramatic changes in the senior management of the Murphy group, he became more involved in the running of his father's business.
Mr Murphy junior today denied that he had ever met the former Dublin City and County Manager George Redmond. James Gogarty had previously claimed that he had attended a meeting with Mr Redmond at Dublin county council offices in 1988 to discuss planning and levies. He told the tribunal he had never been to those offices and only met George Redmond after the tribunal started.
His evidence will continue tomorrow when he is expected to deny claims that he was central to the Ray Burke payment, and was in the former minister’s house the day the money was handed over. He is expected to put forward a number of alibis to prove he was not at Ray Burke's house in 1989 when money was handed over.
