It has emerged the prisoner found hanging in his cell at Wheatfield prison in Dublin this morning tried to take his own life on two previous occasions. The 25-year-old Dublin man was found dead by prison officers just before half past five this morning. Efforts by prison officers to resuscitate him failed.
A spokesman for the prison service said the inmate was under special observation and had been checked every twenty minutes. He said that the prisoner had a history of self-harm and had made a previous suicide attempt. Gardaí and prison officials have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. The prison's suicide awareness group, which is chaired by the governor, is also due to meet to review the situation.
