Gardaí investigating the murder of Sinead Kelly in Dublin last year now believe she was lured to her death. They are seeking to charge three people in connection with her murder. Files on two of them have already been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, a third is being sent this week. The 21-year-old prostitute from Santry in Dublin was brutally stabbed to death on the banks of the Grand Canal.
21-year-old Sinead Kelly was a drug addict who worked as a prostitute around Dublin's Grand Canal to earn money to feed her habit. On June 22 last year, she was stabbed several times in what Gardaí described as a frenzied attack. Residents who heard her screams called the Gardaí, but Sinead Kelly was dead by the time they arrived.
Gardaí believe that she was murdered because she owed £800 to a Dublin drug dealer. Two files, one on him and one on the man whom detectives believe he hired to kill Sinead Kelly have been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. This second man is at present serving a sentence in Mountjoy jail, but under legislation only brought in this year, Gardaí were able to arrest and question him in spite of his incarceration. He was taken to a Garda Station and questioned for twelve hours before being returned to prison and the file completed.
Gardaí are hoping that the DPP will recommend both men be charged in connection with the murder. Another man whom detectives want to question about the case is in England, but Gardaí are aware of his whereabouts. He cannot be extradited for questioning. Now the investigation has led detectives to believe that another person was involved in setting Ms. Kelly up to be murdered, by luring her to a location along the Grand Canal and pointing her out to her killer who stabbed her to death. A file has now been completed on this person and is to be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions this week.
