Bruton calls for statement by Taoiseach

The Fine Gael leader, Mr John Bruton is to ask the Taoiseach to make a statement in the Dail on Ireland's delay in responding to an international money laundering enquiry by the Swedish Authorities.

Speaking on RTE radio, Mr Bruton said that Ireland's reputation was being damaged by the claim that it was the slowest EU member state to respond to a call for help in the enquiry. Mr Bruton also said that the Justice Minister, John O' Donohue, should take personal responsibility for what he described as a very grave error.

The collapse of a Swedish-based investment company and the disappearance of more than 50 million pounds caused a row at a summit of EU leaders earlier this month. Sweden complained that Ireland took 16 months to give the Swedish Public prosecutor the response he needed.

The Government has denied the reports that there was a row at the summit over the investigation. In a statement, the Department of Justice said that Sweden did not raise the issue of an Irish delay in co-operating with the investigation. It also says that Sweden never complained to the Irish government regarding the issue.
