Lenihan's wife says she only received £200 from Haughey

The wife of Brian Lenihan, Ann Lenihan, has told the Moriarty Tribunal that she received £200 in cash from Charles Haughey during the time her husband was receiving treatment for his cancer. She told the tribunal that this was all she or her family got at the time. Mrs. Lenihan, who was in the witness box for a little over five minutes, said that she was satisfied her husband did not receive any cash payments.

Mrs. Lenihan also said that she does not recall any discussions with between her husband and Mr. Haughey regarding an excess between monies raised and expenditure for Brian's treatment in 1989. While she was aware that Mr. Haughey and the late Peter Hanley were involved in raising money for her husband's treatment, she said that she was not aware of Brian receiving a list of donors. She told the tribunal that she has searched the family records for such a list but could not find one.

This morning the Tribunal heard from the manager of AIB Baggot Street that over £188,000 was lodged into the party leaders allowance account in just five weeks in 1989. Earlier at these sittings, it was established that, in total, £82,000 was withdrawn from the account in order to pay for expenses incurred by Mr. Lenihan for his treatment. The Tribunal has now adjourned until further notice.
