Redmond received £2,000 cheque from Murphy Group

George Redmond, the former Dublin Assistant City and County Manager has told the Flood Tribunal that he received a cheque for £2,000 in the post on behalf of the Murphy group, after compiling a report on land owned by them. Mr Redmond said there was nothing inappropriate about this. He said that, a year later when James Gogarty came looking for advice on behalf of the company, he did not feel under compliment to them. He said he never acknowledged the receipt of the cheque and maybe this was discourteous. Mr Justice Flood put it to him that he had not written back, because he was taking care that it would never be seen that he had taken the cheque. To which Mr Redmond replied "that's a very astute point".

Mr Redmond told the Flood Tribunal this morning that he had another source of income while he was working for Dublin Corporation. Mr Redmond said that while he did not have any other source of employment that during 1970 to his retirement in June 1989, he did have other source of income. Mr Redmond said he had provided advice to people about land, and had also given financial advice. But he said while he had been paid for this advice, he had never sought payment for it.

Mr Redmond added that in view of the criminal proceedings against him by the Criminal Assets Bureau, to delve further into this would prove difficult for him and the Tribunal. He said he had come to the Tribunal this morning to answer allegations made by James Gogarty and added that he needed time to consider his position.
