The man who suffered serious head injuries following an assault in Thurles in County Tipperary early this morning has been named as PJ Delaney. Mr Delaney is a member of the Kilkenny senior county hurling team and was a sub at last week's All Ireland final at Croke Park during which his team were defeated by Cork.
The incident occurred at around 2.45am in Liberty Square in the town when a row, which broke out in a disco, spilled onto the street. It is believed that Mr Delaney attempted to calm the situation and was subsequently attacked. Mr Delaney was taken to Cashel Hospital and then transferred to Cork Regional Hospital where he is said to be in a critical condition.
