A man who went on a shooting spree in France yesterday shooting four people dead and injuring another has given himself up to police. Police say Serge Fortin, aged 45, had barricaded himself into in his home in an area outside the city of Rennes after the killings before eventually surrendering early today. The circumstances of the drama are not yet clear but police have said the man was mentally unstable.
The dead included a 50-year-old woman and her mother who was in her seventies. An elderly couple were also killed. Their son alerted the police after escaping the gunman’s bullets. A 19-year-old who was also shot was not seriously injured.
Police initially thought that Fortin had fled the scene but later discovered he was hiding inside his own house. Police said there was nothing in Fortin's past which showed that he would carry out such an atrocity. However, he was described by an official of the military police's special response unit, as a psychologically unstable person.
