RTÉ News Online has won the "Information Excellence" category in the 1999 Golden Spider Internet awards, which were announced in Dublin tonight. The information award, one of thirteen categories, was given for the site, which, according to the organisers, recognised the most intelligent interpretation of the Internet as a communication medium.

RTÉ Online launched its Internet news service last February. It offers live and archived broadcasts of the station's main television news and current affairs programmes. Users can also access Morning Ireland and radio news bulletins. Among those who were also nominated were the Golden Pages and Bord Fáilte.

There were 13 categories in total including: Best Personal Site Award; Young Persons Award; Best Community or Special Interest Award; Best Business Application of the Internet Award; Marketing Excellence Award; 1999 Web Design Agency of the Year; Best Use of Technology Award; Best Use of The Internet by SME Award; Best International Award; and Deadline Advertising Award. This is the third year of the awards, with a 100% increase in the number of entries received last year. The shortlist of nominated sites was announced in August.
