A 29-year-old Sligo man has been charged with possessing a half a million pounds worth of drugs. Calvin Carty of 89 Garagovue Villas, Sligo, appeared before Judge Oliver McGuinness this morning on four charges, including possession of cannabis and ecstasy and possession of cannabis and ecstasy for sale or supply. Carty had been arrested in Tubbercurry, County Sligo, on Monday night and, when charged at Manorhamilton Garda Station last night, replied "no comment".
Sligo District court heard today that the accused was well known to Gardaí in Sligo and given the seriousness of the charges against him, Inspector Liam Fletcher objected to bail. He told Judge McGuinness that the quantity of drugs involved had an estimated value of half a million pounds. Calvin Carty was remanded in custody to Castlerea prison for a week, with consent to bail of £1,000 with an independent surety of £50,000 or £50,000 in cash.
In a seperate development, following further searches by the Sligo Drugs unit in the town this morning, documentation was seized and a man arrested. A man and a woman arrested on Monday night have been released without charge, while a third man arrested on the same night has been detained for a further 72 hours.
