In the southern African state of Rwanda, a Roman Catholic bishop has gone on trial in connection with the 1994 genocide, in which almost one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were murdered. Augustin Misago, a Hutu, has been in detention since April, despite protests from the Vatican. The 56-year-old bishop is the most senior clergyman to face charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. He is accused of failing to protect Tutsis, and in particular he is alleged to have denied assistance to Tutsi girls who subsequently disappeared and are thought to have been murdered.
