Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to an attack on a 17-year-old Italian student in Dublin last night to come forward. The student is in a critical condition in hospital after he was robbed and hit over the head with a bottle in Fairview Park in the city at half past ten last night.
Gardaí are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of a silver BMW car, which was parked nearby at the time of the assault. It is believed that the student was robbed as he walked through the park at around half past ten. However, when he pursued the youths who attacked him, he was hit over the head with a bottle.
When the young man came out of surgery, a hospital spokesman described his condition as "critical, but improving slightly". The young man, who is staying with a local family, was initially taken to the Mater hospital, but was transferred to Beaumont hospital overnight when his condition deteriorated.
