Kildare man jailed for ten years for rape

A 27-year-old County Kildare man has been jailed for 10 years for raping and falsely imprisoning a woman in 1994. Adrian Power of Maddenstown, The Curragh was convicted by a jury last March. He had denied all the charges.

His victim had told the jury that Power and his companion Thomas Stokes pulled her around like a rag doll during her horrific ordeal which went on for some hours. The woman was then working as a prostitute to feed her heroin habit. The offences were committed late at night at Powerscourt Mountain in Enniskerry.

Stokes was convicted of his role in the crime in 1996 and given a life sentence. The victim thought they were going to kill her. Mr Justice Patrick Smith accepted that Stokes was the prime mover but he said that there were no real mitigating factors in what was a brutal and vicious attack. He jailed Power for 10 years on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently.
