Gardai make arrests in Omagh investigation

Police on both sides of the border have made a new series of arrests as part of their investigation of the Omagh bombing last August

Six men were arrested by Gardai in the Dundalk area. Four were taken to Monaghan Garda station and the others to Cavan for questioning in connection with the Omagh bomb last August.

29 people were killed and more than 200 were injured in the blast, which was claimed by the Real IRA. So far, only one man has appeared in court in Dublin, charged with conspiring to cause an explosion and membership of an illegal organisation. He's on bail awaiting trial. Those arrested in the Republic can be held in custody up to 72 hours before being charged or released.

In a co-ordinated action north of the border, the RUC arrested four people in South Armagh. They are being questioned about the Omagh bomb and other serious terrorist crime.

During the operation in Jonesborough police came under attack when a crowd of around fifteen people coming from a party threw stones and glasses at them and beat them with hurleys. Four RUC members were slightly injured.
