The Special Criminal Court has been told that Brian Meehan - the second man to stand trial for the murder of Veronica Guerin - offered to shoot her himself, but was told that a hit-man with a proven record had been chosen instead. At the opening of the trial this afternoon, the 33-year-old Dublin man pleaded not guilty to at total of 17 charges, including one of murdering Veronica Guerin.
The State claims that Meehan was the driver of the motorcycle carrying the killer on the day Ms Guerin was shot. Brian Meehan failed to prevent his trial going ahead at the Special Criminal Court this morning. His counsel John McCudden accused the State of witness-tampering. Meehan is facing drugs and fire arms charges along with the murder charge.
