The former England Rugby Union captain Lawrence Dallaglio has admitted experimenting with drugs in his late teens. But Dallaglio, who resigned as England captain last night, insisted that in his adult life he had become passionately opposed to drug use and that was the message which he wanted young people to hear.
Dallaglio resigned as captain following allegations in the News of the World newspaper that he had used drugs. This morning the twenty six year old Wasps player told reporters at Twickenham he had been foolish and naive in his dealings with undercover reporters from the paper.
The Rugby Football Union will replace the England captain with Leicester lock Martin Johnson until the end of this year's World Cup. The RFU has also pledged to investigate the allegations, made in The News of the World, and the circumstances surrounding them. Disciplinary action will be considered after this enquiry.
A 55-year-old judge will lead the RFU inquiry into the Lawrence Dallaglio drugs allegations controversy. Sir John Kay, a judge in the High Court of Justice heads the panel and will operate completely independently of the RFU.
