Hundreds of fans turned out in the centre of Dublin tonight to honour Gay Byrne, who was made a freeman of the city at a ceremony at the Mansion House. The 64-year-old broadcaster will be stepping down as host of the Late Late Show later this month, after a run of nearly forty years.
Gay Byrne was the 64th person to be given Dublin’s highest honour since the Freeman of the City was introduced in 1876. The Lord Mayor told those outside the Mansion House that the city council had decided to honour Mr. Byrne due to his unparalleled contribution to Irish broadcasting.
