Ninety-six people have died in a town in northern Bangladesh after drinking illegal home-made liquor. Another one hundred people are in hospital after the country's worst case of alcohol poisoning. Six people were arrested for selling the drink.
Officials have described it as the country's worst-ever case of alcohol poisoning. More than 100 people were hospitalised after drinking the liquor in the north-eastern town of Narsingdi, about 50 miles from the capital Dhaka. Local reports suggest the death toll could reach 150.
Police arrested 6 people for selling poisonous home-brewed liquor and sealed-off several shops. The selling of liquor is banned in Moslem Bangladesh but at least 90 Bangladeshis died last year, including 70 in Gaibandha, after consuming illegal home-made alcohol.
