Pope appeals for peace in Kosovo during visit to Romania

Pope John Paul II and the Romanian Orthodox Patriarch Teoctist have made a joint appeal for peace in Kosovo, urging the parties involved to resume a dialogue to find a peaceful settlement. The call came as the Pope continued the second day of his three-day trip to Romania.

Today, he visited the Bellu Catholic cemetery and the Heroes cemetery where he payed his respects to victims of persecution under the communist regime and those who died in the 1989 revolution.

A Vatican spokesman has said the pope will meet the moderate Kosovo Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova on Monday or Tuesday at the Vatican.
