Gogarty finishes giving evidence at Flood Tribunal

The key witness in the Flood Tribunal James Gogarty has finished giving evidence at Dublin Castle. The 81-year-old was discharged by Mr Justice Flood this morning, with the provision that he may be briefly recalled once any court action over the controversial Conroy affidavit is completed.

James Gogarty had spent a total of 33 mornings in the witness box at Dublin Castle, many of them under cross-examination by lawyers for those against whom he has made allegations. This morning tribunal counsel wrapped up a re-examination of Mr Gogarty and the tribunal chairman told him he could go. Mr Justice Flood thanked Mr Gogarty and put him on notice that he might be recalled once any court action over the Conroy affadavit is completed. Mr Gogarty replied, "If I'm alive, I'll be delighted to come in and meet you. I wish you the best of luck."

On leaving the witness box, he was congratulated by well-wishers and family members. Leaving Dublin Castle, Mr Gogarty said he was tired and looking forward to a rest. Mr Justice Flood later adjourned the tribunal until Tuesday, after objections were raised to the calling of new witnesses today. Witnesses on Tuesday are expected to include bank officials and journalists.

Meanwhile, the High Court has reserved its decision on an application by lawyers acting for the Murphy Group. They are seeking leave to challenge a decision of the Tribunal Chairman to admit in evidence the affidavit of a former Chief Executive of the group.
