Libya agrees to hand over Lockerbie suspects

The Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi, has agreed to hand over the two suspects in the Lockerbie bombing case. He made the announcement in an address to parliament in Tripoli during a visit by the South African President, Nelson Mandela.

The Libyan leader told the parliament that he had received all the guarantees he needed from the leaders of South Africa and Saudi Arabia. The two suspects will be tried before a Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands.

Mr. Mandela said that the two would be handed over to the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, on or before the sixth of April. Two hundred and seventy people were killed when a bomb exploded on board a PanAm airliner over Lockerbie in Scotland in December 1988. The airliner was on its way to the United States.
