Man arrested in connection with the issuing of false pass

Gardaí have arrested a County Louth man for questioning in connection with the issuing of false passports. The scam allegedly involved a serving garda sergeant and a retired garda sergeant. The man, who was in his forties, was arrested in Drogheda at 9am today. He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 12 hours. Gardaí said the man was arrested for false pretences.

Last October a garda sergeant in the Louth Meath division was suspended as part of the investigation into irregularities in the issuing of passports. A file is expected to go to the Director of Public Prosecutions. It is believed some of the passports may have ended up in the hands of subversives. The scam is believed to have involved the signing of forms required for the issuing of passports.
