This one reminds me of my Nana.

Ingredients

For the crumble:

  • 300g plain flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 175g brown sugar
  • 200g unsalted butter, at room temperature, cubed (plus a little extra for greasing)

Filling

  • 450g apples, peeled, cored, and cut into small pieces (about 1 cm)
  • 50g brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 1 x drop of vanilla essence
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C 2. Place the flour, salt, and brown sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Add the butterand rub it into the flour mixture using your fingertips.
  2. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs and the butter is fully incorporated.
  3. For the filling, place the chopped apples in a large bowl and sprinkle over the brown sugar, flour, and ground cinnamon. Mix well.
  4. Grease an ovenproof dish. Spoon the apple mixture into the bottom of the dish, then evenly sprinkle the crumble on top.
  5. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the crumble is golden brown and the fruit mixture is bubbling.
  6. Serve warm with thick cream or custard.
