This one reminds me of my Nana.
Ingredients
For the crumble:
- 300g plain flour
- Pinch of salt
- 175g brown sugar
- 200g unsalted butter, at room temperature, cubed (plus a little extra for greasing)
Filling
- 450g apples, peeled, cored, and cut into small pieces (about 1 cm)
- 50g brown sugar
- 1 tbsp plain flour
- 1 x drop of vanilla essence
- Pinch of ground cinnamon
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C 2. Place the flour, salt, and brown sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Add the butterand rub it into the flour mixture using your fingertips.
- Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs and the butter is fully incorporated.
- For the filling, place the chopped apples in a large bowl and sprinkle over the brown sugar, flour, and ground cinnamon. Mix well.
- Grease an ovenproof dish. Spoon the apple mixture into the bottom of the dish, then evenly sprinkle the crumble on top.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the crumble is golden brown and the fruit mixture is bubbling.
- Serve warm with thick cream or custard.
