The Asthma Society of Ireland is hosting a brand new Icy Plunge for Asthma fundraiser on Wednesday, 18 September at the Sandymount Hotel, Dublin.

During the fundraiser business leaders from all over Ireland - who are swapping boardrooms for ice baths - will take part in an inspiring breathwork session with renowned wellness expert Níall Ó Murchú (who lived with asthma as a child) before plunging into freezing water.

All of this will happen under the encouragement of TV presenter, former international rugby sevens player, and Olympian Greg O'Shea, who also has asthma and will take the plunge himself.

Preparing for the Icy Plunge

One of the best ways to get ready for your ice bath is to start using cold showers. This will help your body (and mind) get used to the cold.

How to start

  • At the end of your normal hot shower, turn the water cold.
  • Begin with 20–30 seconds of cold.
  • Over the days and weeks, slowly build up to 2 minutes.
  • Don’t force it — listen to your body. Some days will feel easier than others.

How to breathe

  • Focus on long, calm exhales.
  • Keep the breath soft and steady.
  • This helps your body settle and stops you from tensing up.

Benefits of cold showers

  • Train your body to handle the shock of cold water.
  • Strengthens your circulation and resilience.
  • Boosts energy, mood, and focus.
  • Teaches you how to stay calm under stress.

Important reminders

  • Always go at your own pace.
  • Never force yourself to stay in longer than feels right.
  • If you feel dizzy, unwell, or panicked — stop immediately.
  • Anyone with health issues should check with their doctor before starting.

The key is to build slowly, stay calm, and enjoy the process. The more you practise, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel when it’s time for the ice bath challenge.
