According to the HPSC, STIs present a significant public health challenge with over one million cases being acquired globally every day.
According to the data, STI notification rates in Ireland for 2022 increased compared to 2021, 2020 and 2019, with two-fifths of those notified in 2022 aged less than 25 years of age.
The increase in the total number of STIs last year was mainly due to an increase in gonorrhea (45%) and chlamydia (20%), while notifications of early infectious syphilis (EIS), herpes simplex (HSV), and trichomoniasis have remained relatively stable.
Nurse Sarah Kearns joined Jennifer Zamparelli on RTÉ 2FM to speak about the rise in STIs among teenagers and ways to get tested. Listen back above.
