Suzanne Leyden, qualified nutrition, health and wellness coach and owner of The WellNow Co reviews Gerry Hussey's Awaken Your Power Within.

Self-reflection has been an inevitable exercise for so many people thanks to the pandemic. It can be a challenging thing to approach at the best of times, but can become particularly overwhelming when facing personal and professional challenges at the same time.

That’s where Gerry Hussey’s debut book, Awaken Your Power Within steps to the fore.

Background
Gerry, who is also known as ‘The Soul Coach’, is a successful performance psychologist originally from Galway, now living in Dublin. In this book he gives a clear view of his struggles with his mental health from as young as 11 years old, and the path he has taken to turn his life around. He now lives a full life with his wife, Miriam Hussey, and baby who was born in the first lockdown.

Having an understanding of his background, personal struggles and the turning points in his life is a helpful part of the introduction and lends itself to many lessons. He writes very honestly and covers themes in his story such as vulnerability, love, self-worth, purpose and pursuing your inner truth.

He also looks at how sometimes our behaviour is perceived by others, and whether that might suit our own personal agenda, consciously or not.

"In competitive environments, obsession and desperation can easily be masked as focus, desire and determination."

Mind Body Spirit
But the book is much more than that. It’s not only Gerry’s story, it’s about you, the reader. After Gerry’s background story is told, the book is written in two parts: The Power Of Letting Go and The Path to You True Self. It is interwoven with anecdotes, ways to address some of the issues you may experience, and some tangible ways to approach behaviour change.

The mind body connection is dealt with in a very accessible way. Hussey delves into how relieving physical ailments can be addressed through your mind and your mindset. The practical element to each chapter, called ‘Take A Moment’, has powerful questions, affirmations or exercises relevant to the chapter’s topic that help clarify aspects of yourself such as self-defeating habits, limiting beliefs or your inner critic.

To put it in very simple terms, it helps you look at what you are doing, what you’d like to do and then addresses what behaviour change you would like to make in that area leading to inner transformation.
