Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side, goes the old joke. But there was no grim ending for a female mallard and her eight ducklings today as they received a Garda escort across the street to the River Dodder in Ballsbridge, Co. Dublin.

The charming scene was spotted by our own roaming wildlife reporter, Derek Mooney, who caught the moment on video. Easily distinguished from the green-tinged males, the brown female led her babies in a single file, keeping to the cycle lane away from passing cars.
Keeping them all in check, though, was a Garda, calmly walking behind them and making sure they got to their destination safely.
With the good weather, it seems the mallard family had the same idea as many other families, as they headed to the River Dodder for a paddle. At one point, it seemed the mother was separated from her babies, with passers-by wondering where she'd gotten to. But there was no cause for concern, as the Garda saw the babies safely down to the water.
