Each week on RTÉ LifeStyle, we will have a series of exercise tutorials from the experts at ExWell Medical. Watch today's exercise in the video above.
Today we are focusing on strength. At ExWell Medical, we always say 'move it or lose it'! You can lose as much as 3% to 5% of your muscle mass each decade after age 30.
Even if you are active, you’ll still have some muscle loss. Strength training helps you regain the muscle you lost and helps your cells remain younger since exercise slows cell aging.
Strength training, or resistance training, is a great way to increase the power in your muscles. By strengthening your muscles you increase the support for your joints which is crucial for people who suffer from any joint pain such as arthritis.
This workout is chair-based and you can use household items such as a tea towel and water bottles or tins for weights. It is suitable for all ability levels.
Do your best to complete this work out 2-3 times if you can, taking a rest in between. Let us know on Facebook how you get on.
