Talk to anyone who has swam in Irish waters and they will more than likely tell you it's addictive.
No matter the weather or the season, the varied beaches around the country still call to many, and with good reason. With clear, bracing waters, stunning scenery and bustling communities of avid sea-lovers, there are few places better for lifting the spirits.
Whether you're a beginner or a true devotee, here are our picks of five of the best spots to go for a dip. Go on, dive in!
1. Skerries
A perfect all-rounder of a beach, the North and South beaches at Skerries are shimmering examples of what makes Irish beaches so enthralling. Offering a range of swimming opportunities, the Northside spot is perfect for those just dipping their toes into swimming, as well as for seaside veterans. South beach is for the more adventurous, while North beach - somewhat more sheltered - is the best place to paddle at your own pace. What's more, with endless promenades, play areas, rock pools and amusements, it's great for the whole family.
2. Carrick-A-Rede, Co Antrim
Certainly one for more advanced swimmers, this is one of the most dramatic swimming spots in the country. Nestled along the Causway Coast, seasoned swimmers flock here for the kilometre-long swimming route between Larrybane Bay and Carrick-a-Rede Island. Diving underneath the famous bridge and its gaggle of tourists is definitely something worth experiencing.
3. Seapoint
A beloved and thriving seaside community, Seapoint is like a neighbourhood in and of itself, such is its popularity. That said, the Southside spot never feels crowded, with plenty of space for swimmers to lounge, paddle and play together. With stunning views of Howth across the water and just minutes from bus and DART routes, you couldn't find a more bucolic spot so central. A particularly great setting for a sunrise swim, if you feel like getting your Happy Pear on!
4. Keem Bay, Co Mayo
As a bona fide international beach destination, as established this week, Keem Bay on Mayo's Achill Island is sure to become one of the most sought-after paddling spots in the country, and it's no wonder why. Hugged on three sides by dramatic, verdant hills and facing into gently frothing blue waters, it's the perfect cosy beach to curl up on with some good friends, good food and maybe a good book.
5. Traught beach, Galway
For an extra magical swim, the trip out to Kinvara's Traught beach is worth it for a glimpse of a mermaid or two - the devoted group of swimmers that featured in RTÉ's documentary Vitamin Sea. As a Blue Flag beach, its sand and water are impeccably clean, and is a diverse community itself, being part of the conservation area, Galway Bay Complex.
