Maura explains why she isn't speaking Irish with her son yet

Last month, Team LifeStyle took a road trip to RTÉ Cork to chat with Today hosts Maura Derrane and Dáithí Ó Sé. In the above video, Maura explains why she is cherishing Cal's younger years and why she hasn't begun speaking Irish with him yet.

On her Summer plans, Maura says: "Cal is four, he just turned four the other day, so it is a very important time - it's the cutest time. It's the time where they love you still - before they say, 'I hate you' and bang the door. So I want to keep those years special."

"But, do you know what? I've always worked so I'll probably be wrecked this Summer because I'll have him on my own. I have people to mind him now, you see, I just run to work to get a break but it's great to have that time with him."

"I always do little bits and pieces, I do some commercial work during the Summer and I just feel it's nice to mix it up but it is very important because time does go so fast - and I know it's something that our mothers said to us and we kind of forget but the reality is, time does fly and the older you get the quicker it goes."

"Cal will be pushing me around in a wheelchair because I left it so late to have him so while I'm still on my feet, I might as well enjoy him."

As a proud Gaeilgeoir, Maura is delighted to speak Irish on air with her co-host, Dáithí, but will she be bringing the language home to Cal?

"I'm a native speaker, of course, and I've worked for TG4 but you know, in recent times, I don't speak enough Gaeilge and the only place that I do really speak Gaeilge is here with Dáithí - we regularly speak with each other in Irish just kind of in conversation but we use a lot Gaeilge on air, in and out of breaks, what's coming up... I think people appreciate that."

She continued: "Gaeilge is a big deal. I haven't started speaking Irish, I will admit, to Cal yet. I kind of felt that I wanted to get one language kind of straightened out first before moving on to the next but he's going to be spending a lot of the Summer at home in Inishmore."
