The RTÉ Archives are the ultimate source for a good Throwback Thursday. This week we're watching Gay Bryne dedicate an episode of The Late Late Show to the Irish male in 1981.
In this episode of The Late Late Show, a panel of guests discuss the men of Ireland. Host Gay Byrne hits the streets of Dublin to find out what women think of Irish men and what they look for in a significant other.
Needless to say, the opinions were varied. One unimpressed woman summarised Irish men as:
Cold, badly dressed, ill-mannered, have no sense of style, and generally very boring.
It wasn't all bad news though, as one lady was a big fan of the men of Ireland, Gaybo in particular. Speaking to the host, she said:
Taking yourself as example - they're perfect.
In 1981, models for the ideal Irish man ranged from Johnny Logan to Terry Wogan, but as for relationships, the ladies of Dublin said they were looking for personality, sincerity, charm, a good sense of humor and "somebody who has to say rather than just interested in what they can get for the night."
