Psychotherapist John Sharry joined Ray D’Arcy to discuss parenting, and the importance of spending quality time with children.
John insists that quality time with children isn't an extra side to parenting but one of the most important aspects.
"All the problems I see when parents come to me with children with behavioural problems or emotional problems… usually there’s some disconnection.”
Although we can all feel strapped for time, John says that quality can be fit into your day to day routine in very manageable ways.
"It's the simple everyday things that matter like walking to school together where you have a chat"
Other opportunities to talk to your children are at bedtime or dinner time where you can give them your full attention with no TV or phones around.
John says small steps can be taken to prevent distance between family members.
“You have to find ways of enjoying each other… Try to enjoy your children each day.”
