Irish people answer the question "What is Lent?"

Flashback Friday! The RTÉ Archives have brought us back to 1987 to discover the meaning of Lent...kind of.

Shay Healy searches North Earl Street for the meaning of Lent. The answers given by Dubliners in 1987 are absolutely brilliant.

When discussing the subject, one young woman asks "Didn’t God do something for forty days?" while another says it is all about tradition.

"Eating pancakes and getting your forehead all black."

When Shay asked one man why he was giving up "the drink” for Lent, he responded with a very sincere answer.

"To keep me Ma quiet."

Lent

Many of Dublin's youngsters agreed that they wouldn't be eating meat on Good Friday but as for giving things up, the subjects varied.

"Men. That's a good one, I'll give up men for Lent."
